Farm Kitchen makes fabulous, buttery baked goodies just up the road from Central Market Poulsbo.
Not surprisingly, the renovated red barn that houses the kitchen sits in the middle of an 18-acre, organic farm that has become a popular venue for weddings, retreats and community events. But it’s the commercial kitchen in that barn – started by former Bainbridge Bakers owner Hollis Fay – that commands our attention.
Scrumptious shortbread cookies are just one part of what makes that kitchen special. For Farm Kitchen owners Hollis and Anne Thatcher, it’s all about community. Their commercial kitchen often nurtures fledgling food service entrepreneurs. Farm Kitchen offers consultation, contacts and general assistance for those trying to launch a food-related business.
The farm has let their classes and open-for-breakfast models go as they focus instead on their growing wholesale baking production. Farm Kitchen opened in 2000, on Port Gamble Road initially as a commercial kitchen for use by caterers and other food producers. Butler Green Farms grows vegetables and flowers on the farm for sale at different venues – including our markets. As the location grew increasingly popular for events, barn storage was renovated into party space, including a dance floor reclaimed from an old barn on the Columbia River and a large patio bordered by lavender.
Hollis’ love for baking began in Alaska, where dark winter days are a little brighter with sweet treats. She left Alaska, but brought with her a passion for simple, fresh food. People getting together to share great food is a beautiful thing. As a gathering place and as an organic farm, the fine folks at Farm Kitchen are proud to nurture the roots of community. We think that’s pretty great.
