Last year, more than 100 million people fired up their big screens, tablets and even their phones to watch the “Big Game” (the real name is copyrighted by the NFL and they don’t mess around). So we know that many of you will be doing the same thing this weekend.
Of course, the real football fans are actually paying attention to the game – the rest of us came primarily to enjoy decadent game-day food, talk about how good (or how bad?) the halftime show is, and maybe enjoy a few laughs from a clever commercial or two.
What are we doing between those commercials, besides bathing in the glow of our screens and rooting around in the fridge for another beer? Eating. Eating a lot. In fact, it’s said that Americans eat more food on Super Sunday than any other day except Thanksgiving. Like … wow!
You and I and the rest of the country will order nearly 2 million pizzas and mow down enough chips to stretch across the entire United States – twice! And holy cow do we eat a lot of chicken wings! The National Chicken Council estimates about 1 1/2 billion wings go down the hatch. So, if you’re planning to watch the game without chicken wings, you need to change your game plan ‘cause somebody’s going to be disappointed.
And wouldn’t you know it? Our Own Chicken Wings just happen to be on our Big Board Buys this week for $5.98 lb., a savings of more than $3 lb. Our Delis serve them fully cooked and seasoned with our favorite traditional and bold flavors, like Hot Wings with Our Own Anchor Sauce, Barbecue Wings with Our Own Barbecue Sauce and smoky-sweet Teriyaki Wings. Order all three for a quick and easy solution to what to serve for game day.
Not a chicken lover? Stock up on fresh baby back ribs at just $3.48 lb., a savings of more than $2 lb. With its hints of sticky-sweet molasses, apple cider and cinnamon, our Apple Cider Ribs recipe is a fantastic choice for a hearty game day meal.
Or grab an armful of extra-large Hass avocados, 3/$5, and brew up a batch of fresh homemade guacamole. If you need a jump start, check out our Easy Guacamole recipe for a nudge in the right direction.
If you’re planning on hosting a horde of football fans, cook up a pot of our Tailgate Chili. Ground beef, tomatoes, jalapeños and beer all stewed up together makes for a bowl full of hearty goodness.
Let us help you make the meal just as memorable as the “Big Game!” In fact we aim to create some “Super” flavorful choices, some of which you can put in a “Bowl.”
Our very own cheese whiz, Shauna Howell, offers up a cheese worth discovering.
Solare Spanish Mahón: This is probably one of the most crowd-friendly cheeses we carry. An aged cow’s milk cheese made on the island of Menorca off the coast of Spain, it has a burnished brown rind and a deep golden paste. With its chewy texture, it literally melts as it sits on your tongue, developing a nutty caramel-like finish.
Slow down and savor this cheese with a juicy glass of Spanish wine. No one would be disappointed if you included it on every cheese plate you make, either.
