Falling into Pumpkins and Pears

(Posted Sept. 28, 2012) Sterino Farms is giving 25 cents to breast cancer causes for every pink pumpkin sold in October – and we’ve got plenty!

The pumpkins are here! All of our stores now have their giant pumpkin displays in place so even if the weather still resembles summer, you can be sure that it’s fall. The bad news is that Jake Sterino just informed us that his partner who grew the Knucklehead and Long Island Cheese varieties of pumpkins had a very low yield at harvest. Sadly, the few we already have received will be it for the season! The good news is there are plenty of Jack-O-Lantern, Ghost, Cinderella, Pink and Sugar Pie pumpkins available and the quality is excellent. We also have a wide selection of ornamental corn, mini-pumpkins, gourds and corn stalk bundles to choose from.

Berries are winding down fast and will be done before we know it. As far as we are concerned, Northwest blueberries are finished. What is still available are berries that have been sitting in storage or they’re late varieties that lack great flavor. But don’t worry, you won’t have to wait for next summer – we expect new-crop blueberries from Argentina or Chile to start in late October or early November. 

Sakuma Brothers Farms’ strawberries are still trickling in from Skagit Valley and the quality is good. Dan Sakuma says he thinks he may get one more bump in supply in the next week or so, weather permitting. Sterino’s blackberries are still going strong! The fall red raspberry seems to have suffered a bit from the long hot dry spell we have had – the fruit is smaller than expected and not coming on as it has in years past.

This next week we will finally have a full line of Northwest variety pears in both organic and conventional. Choose from Bartlett, Bosc, D’Anjou, Red Starkrimson, Comice or Asian Pears. We also have Forelle and Seckle Pears.

New-crop Florida red grapefruits are available now – we should see new-crop Texas Rio Star grapefruit in about two weeks.

What? Seven Weeks to Thanksgiving?!

Fresh cranberries are in, can you believe it? We are only about seven weeks away from the Thanksgiving holiday. It still feels like summer to me, but the mornings sure have that fall smell in the air. Speaking of fall, wild chanterelle and lobster mushrooms are available now. A little more moisture in the air and we should have enough that we can offer them at a great value.

The Northwest harvest continues to pick up in pears, apples, potatoes, fall squashes and onions – while the harvest winds down and in some cases has ended in items such as summer stone fruits, lettuce, summer squashes, tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, sweet corn and broccoli. For the next several weeks it’s all about pears, apples, squash and pumpkins!
